His shots are outstanding. The iPlayer link works until 13th March. It's definitely worth watching - he's a great photographer and it's a very well produced programme.

"Indian environmentalist and photographer, Sandesh Kadur, has traded a comfortable career in the family business to explore the natural wonders of the Western Ghats mountains.

Just a few hours drive from the commercial bustle of his native Bangalore, Sandesh could be a world away. The monsoon pours six metres of rainfall each year on the remote peaks and isolated valleys of the Ghats. Alongside familiar Indian species like elephants, tigers and peacocks are more mysterious creatures that are not found anyhere else - a purple frog with a face like a shrew and a monkey with a lion-like mane and tail.

Most intriguing of all, there is a chance sighting of a grey big cat, unlike anything scientists have seen before. To find out whether this enigmatic cat-in-the-ghat really is a new species, Sandesh must climb to the summit of these mountains. His journey is a reminder that in fast-track, modern India, this cloud-wrapped wilderness is more precious than ever."

Natural World: The Mountains of the Monsoon on iPlayer

Free Photos?

If you've got an account on Flickr or on any other large photo-sharing site, you'll probably have been contacted by people asking to use a photo of yours for nothing. Thomas Hawk blogs about it here: Should You Give Away Your Photos For Nothing To People Who Can Pay?

I totally agree with his post. Here are some examples of mine:

Eurostar: wanted it for nothing, didn't even reply when I enquired what they would pay

Watford Museum: as this is non-profit, and I live in Watford, I agreed. This led to work from Watford Council. I've often thought that Olympus cameras were very suitable for nature and wildlife photography. I've seen some great results from Olympus E series cameras on Flickr, with all sorts of lenses.

The company has had a reputation for excellent optics since the 1960s, and their Olympus Trip camera sold 10 million units in nearly twenty years on sale - reputedly the biggest selling camera of all time.

The Four Thirds system (aspect ratio of 4:3 rather than the 3:2 of 35mm) has allowed Olympus to make their cameras and lenses smaller and lighter than the competition. The 2x crop factor is an advantage, too. All E series customers get a voucher for a free mount that allows use of older Olympus lenses, and many other lenses can be fitted. I've seen Leica, Voigtlander and Nikkor lenses used on an E-1 to great effect.

So it was with great interest that I read John Isaac's Olympus 510 Field Review (link below.) He's used an Olympus E-1 for all the photos in his new book, due out in 2008.

Olympus 510 Field Review by John Isaac

John Isaac's website

Tengsama's photos on Flickr (great shots, and check out that lens collection!)

Yellowstone to Yukon: Freedom to Roam

German wildlife photographer Florian Schulz is featured in a new exhibit at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, University of Washington. "Yellowstone to Yukon: Freedom to Roam" opened on June 16 and documents the effort to preserve wildlife corridors from Yellowstone National Park to Canada's Yukon Territories. These corridors would link existing parks and public lands to ensure the survival of one of the world's last intact mountain ecosystems.

This is a rare chance to see large format wildlife photography. Schulz spent 10 years roaming the Rockies to capture the images, and will give a lecture and slide show on Oct. 23. The exhibit is organized by the museum in collaboration with The Mountaineers Books and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative.

The museum is on the University of Washington campus, at the corner of Northeast 45th Street and 17th Avenue Northeast. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and until 8 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month.

The Burke Museum website

The website of Florian Schulz

Heather Angel Workshop

"World renowned photographer Heather Angel is gearing up for the 11th Wildlife & Natural History Workshops at Saint Hill Manor in West Sussex with Nikon U.K. on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July 2007."

The press release is here.

News Roundup

The first osprey chick born at the Loch Garten RSPB site. Danny has got really close to water voles over a long period of time, and has produced the best images of them that I've ever seen. We got loads of great deers shots but what I had bargained for when we parked the car were Ring-tailed Parakeets flying from tree to tree.

Vivid green, they obviously make a brilliant subject for a photo - but you'll need to be quick. Pictured here is one I managed to get as I stood in the car park.

By the way, the best place to see them is at the Richmond Gate entrance to the park on Star and Garter Hill. For those of you with Sat Nav, enter this postcode - TW10 6RR. Once there, go through the main gates, turn right on the mini roundabout and head for the White Lodge lodge car park on the right. Once you get out, you'll hear them before you see them!

Interestingly, the Beeb published an article about Parakeets last week. Apparently there are 30,000 in London. It .. maintains its fast F2.8 aperture over the entire zoom range.

Shooting distance and focal length can be viewed on the lens' LCD panel." If they show the current depth of field on the LCD panel, that would be very, very useful, but they don't mention that in their press release.

Filters are rear mounted, and a circular polarizing filter can be used. It comes with a dedicated 2x teleconverter. No price or launch date is set, and the weight is unknown but apparently Sigma were using two people to carry it around at PMA. Rumours that it comes with a free wheelbarrow are unfounded, but it certainly doesn't look light. It doesn't look like it'll be cheap either.

F/2.8 in a lens of this length is unusual, I think it's the world's first. Edit: Thanks Albert (comment below) for clearing up the DG classification - this lens works fine on full-frame 35mm sensors (and film!)

No-one has reviewed it yet, that I can see.

Natura Magica

You might want to double check this, because my knowledge of the Swedish language comes purely from one Stranglers' record.

Natura Magica is a Swedish nature photography collective of eight photographers who have a very interesting, graphic style. Their work is striking, and well worth a look. Much use of long exposures, and lovely soft bokeh. His latest newsletter has some shots showing the amazing ISO 3200 performance, "comparable to ISO 400 in the 1Ds MII and the MII 1DN." Unrelated to the MK III, Fabiola del Alcazar has interviewed Arthur Morris on her excellent Nature Art blog.

Andy Rouse has prepared a document detailing the new features in the MK III that are particularly of interest to nature and wildlife photographers. We've already missed the first deadline, but three remain, and there are prizes for each stage.

The categories are 'deer', 'deer country' and 'stalking connections.' "The judges will be looking for imaginative pictures which are well executed, composed, exposed & focussed. Deer doing something or illustrating a particular activity will be more eye catching than a straight forward portrait – provided the above qualities of production are complied with. Deer Country & Stalking Connnections should also be imaginative and illustrative and technically well produced. Deer do not necessarilly have to feature in either of these categories although it would be preferred if there was some evidence of, or relating to, deer in ‘Deer Country’ pictures."

For non-BDS members the competition costs £5 per quarter, the three remaining entry dates are 1st May, 10th August & 10th October 2007.

Neil McIntyre is a previous winner of the overall competition, and we've been lucky enough to spend some time with him in Scotland a couple of years ago, where we had some excellent opportunities with red squirrels, crested tits, greater spotted woodpeckers, and of course, deer. There is an interesting interview with him on the BDS website (link below.)

Our two favourite places for red deer are the Scottish Highlands, particularly around Melgarve and the Findhorn Valley, and Richmond Park, in London. (Richmond Park has Fallow deer too.)

There are many other good areas for deer photography - take a look at your local wildlife trust website (the BBC has good regional information too). One popular area is Ashridge forest near Berkhamstead.

British Deer Society competition

Neil McIntyre interview

Neil McIntyre website

Ashridge forest information

UK Deer information

Above photo 'Deer and Photographer' taken in Richmond Park (c) Matt Jones

Wired for Wildlife

Kim Wolhuter is a wildlife photographer, National Geographic cameraman and independent filmmaker based in Southern Africa. I first noticed his owl photography in AP last year - the article was very interesting and had a wealth of tips for the prospective owl photographer. Since then I've also seen other articles showing off his excellent portfolio of deer photos. His library is very extensive, and on his website you can see a broad range of excellent images of the wildlife and landscapes of Great Britain. And if - like me - you've never seen a 24-hour old badger, have a look in the news section of his site! If we do enter, I doubt we'll trouble the scorers, but one thing is for sure: if you don't enter, the odds are stacked against you.

Advice from Mark Carwardine: "Imagine you are a judge looking at thousands and thousands of photographs. Many are technically flawless - well exposed, perfectly sharp and pleasantly composed. After a while you take these key ingredients for granted. You become desperate for something really creative, fresh and surprising to leap out from the screen. The pictures that do leap out are the ones that win. So just repeat the mantra 'originality, originality, originality' first thing every morning and last thing at night and you'll be on the road to success."

Closing date is 23rd March - full details here.

The stunning snowy owl photo is from Vincent Munier - it's one of three brilliant shots that he got in the 2006 competition. It gave a concise breakdown of the opportunities in each month, with a handy timeline that I cut out and stuck on my notice board (I wish I'd paid more attention to it January to May, but that's another story.)

So when I found out that he had written a book in a similar vein, I was really keen on reading it. It differs from his articule in AP in that it is specifically about the Dorset countryside and wildlife, and doesn't focus primarily on photography. It has almost 200 photographs, superb landscapes and wildlife shots showing almost anything you can think of. (I love the pictures of bank voles and weasels, and the kingfisher shot is excellent - but there isn't a duff photo in the whole book.)

With 140,000 images in his stock library, Colin Varndell must have photographed just about everything relating to nature and wildlife in the British Isles. It certainly seems like it - his book is simply packed with information, and is a vital resource for anybody interested in nature not only in Dorset, but in the UK in general. The idea of a chronological tour through the year works really well and makes it easy to dip into to see what is going on at any particular time.

Colin Varndell's book is well worth reading, it is an inspirational resource for wildlife photographers and his photographic output is staggeringly good. I hope that sometime he follows it up with a book specifically relating to wildlife photography, as his technique is clearly faultless and the AP article contained a mine of useful information.

Article on Colin Varndell in DorsetLife Magazine

Wild Dorset: The Year in Photographs at Amazon.co.uk

I can't find his website, but Google Images shows a lot of his pictures

Great Stuff from the Philippines

Excellent bird images from Romy Ocon in the Philippines (link below.) It's a companion to their website, which concerns itself with wild UK predators. Their statement:

"We strongly believe that polarized views held about Britain’s wild predators - both present and future - can be reconciled through a shared willingness to celebrate our natural heritage and through partnership and open discussion. They are large, strong creatures that often take great delight in spooking at nothing. If you walk around the back of them, keep out of range. Wear strong boots - they love 'accidentally' stepping on your toes.

If the horse's ears aren't straight up and forward "like Batman's", forget it! 'Donkey Ear' pictures are not popular with equestrians. To get the horse's attention, get an assistant to stand out of frame in front of the horse and do something like this, very, very gently:
- shake jangly objects (like keys)
- sweep the ground with a broom
- play with something that rustles
- wave a carrot at them

Flash photography. It's for the confident, brave and/or stupid. Personally I never bother, but some people do (see end of article.) At big events, the horses are probably able to take it without spooking. ("They evolved to avoid wolves, wildcats and bears et al, none of which resembles a flashgun.")

For showjumping, I find myself using settings around f/5.6 at 1/300th or faster on my 70-200. Experiment to see (a) what aperture gives you enough DoF, and (b) how slow you can go with the shutter speed. Pictures that show a little motion around the feet are good to have!
If you're not doing event photography, but you have other commercial intentions, get model releases even if your pictures don't include any humans!

For inspiration, have a look at Horses by Yann Arthus Bertrand. He's the guy that does the open-air photographic exhibitions of his 'Earth from the Air' work, but he is also a master at portraits of all kinds. He uses a massive canvas backdrop and lights with two flashes, the results are quite stunning. (We also recommend his book Being a Photographer which sounds pretentious, but isn't.)

Great new BBC show - Hands on Nature

Watched the first episode yesterday and it's brilliant. I only found it by chance as for some reason best known to those in BBC marketing, it doesn't seem to have had any publicity at all. Criminal! Similarly, it's on at a funny time - 3pm weekdays. It deserves a better slot than that. Anyway, hosted by BBC wildlife expert and photographer Chris Packham, it takes us on a tour of UK wildlife hotspots - a photographer's dream.

As Chris himself says: "Nature needs to be experienced first hand. You have to be able to touch it, see it, smell it and exercise your curiosity. And that's what Hands On Nature is all about."

We agree. In fact that's why we got into wildlife photography in the first place. By the time you read this, the series may be half way through but there's an excellent website to back it up where you can find even more information.

Here's the link to the Beeb's Hands on Nature website: Hands On Nature.

Wildfile - Mammoth UK Wildlife Links

That's mammoth as in huge. "A lot of young photographers just getting into wildlife photography don't quite make the link that they have a responsibility to protect what's out there," Tom says.

"We have the ability to make images that will teach people about endangered species and places needing protection, pictures that can even change minds, and we have a responsibility to do it. Sometimes I meet people who sort of skip that part. They want to take pictures because they think it's a cool thing to be a wildlife photographer. They don't quite understand they have the option to do more than just take pretty pictures."

You'll find the whole article here: Thomas D Mangelsen. Among this year's most notable findings is the description of the water vole as "seriously under threat". Alas I've not been lucky enough to see one in the wild, let alone photograph one. Not hard to see why when the report describes the water vole as "a contender for the UK's most rapidly declining mammal". A real shame.

You can download a free copy of the report here: The Report. I take mine everywhere and wouldn't be without it now. Just to have the re-assurance of being able to back up your CF cards in an instant, plus the ability to do a quick edit of what you've done in the field is brilliant. It also plays movies in .avi or .MP4 format. I've just discovered Handbrake (Mac only) which converts all your DVDs into said files in a whizz. So if the wildlife doesn't want to come out and play, I can sit back and watch The Office Series 1 which I've just converted.

In fact, if you don't want to take my word for it, one of the world's greatest wildlife photographers, Moose Peterson uses one. There can be no higher praise in my book. Check out his thoughts here: Moose's P2000 Review. You can find more from Epson themselves here: Epson P2000. I particularly like these features, most of which I think are new:

- nice cropping tool

- curves support

- card downloader which can work in the background - you can start viewing a slideshow part way through the copy and the new pictures copied over get tacked on the end of the slideshow (good for reviewing your stuff quickly)

- great hot pixel setting (zaps individual problem pixels painlessly)
I still need to look at these features, they sound promising:

- upsampling capability (doing it at the raw stage is a good idea!)

- view multiple images at same time (to find sharpest of a sequence etc)
I wish:

- ... I could find a way of doing basic white balance presets (cloudy, daylight etc) in a similar way to Adobe Camera Raw
All in all this program does most of what I need, I find some of the settings very harsh in their default mode, but that might just be a matter of taste. I personally do not sharpen unless I'm in the output stage, so I have found myself turning sharpness and detail extraction right down in RawShooter. That may be a matter of taste though...

In summary, I think this is an excellent program. I don't think I'll be chucking my copy of PhotoShop away - but I certainly won't be using Adobe Camera Raw as often.

Favourites from Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2005

I haven't bought the book yet - I don't think it's quite finished rolling off the presses - but these are my favourites so far from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2005 competition. Aboard Guideliner in August, David Leaver recommended RawShooter Essentials - a free program - and gave me a copy. Recently I've found myself using it more and more often, and RawShooter Premium may just have the extra features to make it my main raw converter.

Andy Rouse is involved with Pixmantec and he is pushing this software a lot - it looks like it's going to live up to the hype.

Get RawShooter Essentials (freeware) or RawShooter Premium (US$ 59 plus taxes, about 50 euros) from the Pixmantec website. He's always an advocate of showing the utmost consideration for wildlife. In his words, "meeting wildlife on their own terms most often rewards us with great photographs."

Something I've heard before from another great wildlife photographer, David Leaver, is "always leave before your subject has had enough of you!" David Leaver cruises the Hebrides for much of the year, and I'm sure the otters, basking sharks and minke whales can recognise the sound of his engine. He has a rapport with them - they know there is no need to fear his boat. You can apply the same principles to your local wildlife - it works!

The Art of Sitting by Moose Peterson

How to photograph 40 British species in a day!

The British Wildlife Centre in Surrey is a revelation.
